  1. Where did you get your career started and what was the most valuable lesson you learned early on?
My career began in 1980 at Kissell Mortgage Company in Springfield, Ohio where I managed a department of 12 people in a loan servicing area. All of these people were older than me since I was just 21 years old. I learned that if I was to gain their respect as a leader I had to work hard and always put the good of the department, the employees, and the quality of our work first before anything else.
  1. What inspires, drives, or motivates you in your career?
I am inspired by helping my clients achieve their financing goals. Whether it’s my lender client or borrower client, they have goals and my job as their representative is to obtain the best loan terms for both parties and make sure we overcome any obstacle which may arise during the approval and closing processes. I like winning, getting deals done.
  1. What advice can you share for working with a challenging client or colleague?
You cannot change people. People are who they are and we cannot change them. I can’t control what my clients and colleagues do so it’s important for me to not try. All I can do is do the best job I can do and treat people with respect and understanding.
  1. What do you see taking shape in our industry in the next 5 or 10 years?
A complete change in how retail looks. The retailers who will survive will do what Best Buy did—remember that the customer is right and is always telling the retailer what he/she wants. Whether it’s price, expertise, service or shopping experience, listening to the customer will help retailers with a lot of real estate decisions they will need to make in the face of Amazon. I’m also intrigued with how driverless cars and drones affect our economy and the way we do things.
  1. Do you have any passions or hobbies outside of work?
I love to play golf, travel and I love to write. I also love playing and being with my two grandsons.
  1. Who is your personal hero?
My daughter. She’s the best mother I know and she’s a stay-at-home mom raising two wonderful little boys. She’s doing a fantastic job with her boys and is my personal hero.
